Sunday at St. Columba's
Three services, one parish
A quiet said Eucharist at eight, the full Choral Eucharist at ten, and Evensong at five from October to May. Pick the one that suits you, or come to all three. A few people do.
Running late? Slip into a back pew on the Willard Street side. The verger will bring you a leaflet.
Your first Sunday at ten
What happens at the Choral Eucharist
It's the service with the most going on, so here it is in order. The leaflet you're handed at the door tells you when to sit and stand.
Ten o'clock, minute by minute
The choir warms up
You'll hear them through the vestry wall. The organ voluntary begins at 9:50.
Procession and first hymn
Stand as the cross passes. Hymn numbers are on the boards either side of the chancel.
Readings, psalm and sermon
Old Testament, the psalm sung by the choir, the Epistle, the Gospel, then twelve minutes from the pulpit.
The Eucharist
Come up the center aisle to the rail. Gluten-free wafers are offered at the left-hand end.

Coffee in the undercroft
Down the stairs by the font. Someone will talk to you, but not too much.
Leaflets and music lists
This Sunday's leaflet, before you arrive
Some people like to read ahead, and some need large print. Everything we hand out at the door is here first, by Friday afternoon.

Questions
Things people ask at the door
Do I have to be Episcopalian to receive communion?
No. Anyone baptized, in any church, is welcome at the rail. If you aren't baptized or aren't sure, come forward with your arms crossed and the priest will bless you.
What should I wear?
Whatever you'd wear to a decent lunch. Students come in fleece and boots. Nobody minds.
Is there a nursery?
Yes, for babies up to age three, in the room behind the font. Two background-checked carers are there from 9:45.
Why does everyone bow when the cross goes past?
It's an old habit of respect, not a rule. Do it or don't; both are normal here.
Can I come to Evensong and nothing else?
Of course. About a third of the Evensong congregation never comes in the morning, and we are glad of every one of them.
Is the building accessible?
The Willard Street entrance is level with an automatic door. There's an accessible restroom in the parish hall, and a hearing loop covers the whole nave.
