Anxiety and panic
Practical tools for racing thoughts, sleepless nights and the dread before work, with a clinician who will go at your pace.
Sliding-scale counseling · Ann Arbor
Within two working days, from a private number. Licensed therapists for adults, couples and families, and you pay what your household can manage: from $10 a session, and no one is turned away for lack of money.
Rather call? (555) 014-3380

Hana or another intake worker will call within two working days, at the time and in the way you asked. If things get harder before then, call or text 988 at any hour.
Who we are
Steady Ground opened in 2009 in two rooms above a bike shop on Packard Street, because a handful of therapists were tired of turning people away over money. We are still on Packard, now on the whole second floor, with nine licensed clinicians and four supervised interns.
Every fee is set by household income and size, using the same table we publish on this site. Around a third of our clients pay $25 or less. Grants and gifts from neighbors cover the difference, so your fee never depends on how good a story you can tell.
What happens after you ask
You can stop at any step. No one will chase you.
Fill in the four-field form above, or call (555) 014-3380. You don't have to explain much.
Hana asks what's going on, what times suit you and what you can pay. Your fee is set on this call.
We pair you with a clinician who fits what you described, and offer two or three times to choose from.
Fifty minutes, in person on Packard Street or by video. You can switch clinicians at any point, no questions asked.
What we help with
If what you're carrying isn't listed, ask anyway. We will tell you honestly if someone else would serve you better, and help you get there.

Individual · Tuesday group
For a death, a divorce, a diagnosis or a life that didn't go the way you planned. Our grief group has met every Tuesday since 2011.

Joint sessions, evenings
Two of our clinicians are licensed marriage and family therapists. Sessions are priced by household, so couples pay one fee, not two.

After school, with a parent's consent
Weekday appointments from 3:30 PM so school isn't missed, plus a Saturday circle for the parents of teenagers.
From people who came in
I'd been putting it off for three years because I assumed I couldn't afford it. My fee is $20.
Hana never once made me feel like a case number. She called back the next morning, like she said she would.
My husband and I paid one fee for the both of us. That's the only reason we went.
The Tuesday group is the one place I don't have to pretend I'm fine.
I switched therapists after two sessions and nobody made it awkward.
When we pick up
Leave a message any time and we return it the next working day. The phone line is not a crisis line.

Four fields, two working days, a fee you can manage. If it can't wait, the help-now page lists who to call tonight.
Design notes
Steady Ground is a sliding-scale counseling center, so the site has one job above the rest: let a nervous person ask for an appointment in under a minute, then answer the money question honestly. Everything else is reassurance and logistics.
Castoro is an old-style serif drawn by Tiro Typeworks with soft, open curves; it reads like a paperback you'd lend a friend, which is the tone a first-time client needs. We set it at a modest 1.2 scale and never in capitals. Hanken Grotesk carries the forms and fee tables at 18px, because the person filling them in may be reading through anxiety or tears.
The palette comes from the Huron River on a gray March morning: spruce-green water, pale lichen paper and a lamp-amber accent used sparingly for links and highlights. There is no clinical white and no alarm red anywhere, including on the crisis page. The dark theme deepens the river rather than inverting it, so evening visitors get the same quiet room.
A centred masthead with the pages underneath feels settled and unhurried, like the sign on an established practice. Seven pages, each named for the question a client is actually asking: what will it cost, who will I see, what happens at the first visit, and what do I do if it can't wait.
The first screen is the appointment request itself, kept to four fields. Most people who look up a counselor have rehearsed the phone call several times and still not made it; a short form they can finish on the bus lowers that bar. Beside it sit plain promises about callbacks, cost and privacy.
The nav action is "Ask for a first appointment" because asking is the hard part and booking comes later. "Work out your fee" answers the second fear directly. "I need help right now" appears on every page, set in the same calm style as everything else.
No staged therapy-couch photos and no clients' faces. The hero is a boardwalk through wet woodland, which is what the center's name means, and the river and lake pictures elsewhere are all within a short drive of Packard Street. Clinicians appear in real portraits, and groups are shown as empty chairs or from a distance.
Body text is 18px with long line height and every form field has a visible label and an optional tag rather than asterisks. Contrast is checked in both themes. Crisis numbers are plain text links that work with a screen reader and a single tap.
Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
