Why Hannah's Circle looks the way it does

Hannah's Circle meets in a 1928 bungalow, and the site should feel like that house: a front room with books on every surface, unhurried, a little old-fashioned. We kept away from the usual women's-ministry kit of script fonts and pastel florals, and took the palette from Tulsa itself: the redbud along Cherry Street and the brass on the Deco buildings downtown.

Built for
Women in Tulsa of every age and church background: young mothers, working women who can only come in the evening, women grieving a loss or waiting for a child, and older women willing to walk alongside someone younger.
Navigation
Left sidebar. A fixed column holds the name, every page and the address, so nothing is ever more than one click away on desktop.
Pages
Home, Find a circle, This fall's study, The Waiting Room, Mentoring pairs, Spring retreat
Hero
A personal letter from the pastor or director as the opening: a greeting, two or three short paragraphs and a handwritten-style signature, with their portrait. Variants: a = the letter on a sheet with the portrait overlapping its left edge; b = an editor's-letter layout with a huge greeting, two text columns and a small captioned portrait; A tall photograph on one side; on the other, the headline, a short intro and three 'next step' rows with arrows instead of a pair of buttons. Variants: a = photo bleeds off the left edge, rows show when each step happens; b = photo bleeds off the right edge, rows are numbered steps set large

Typography

Bona Nova was drawn from a 1926 Polish book face, so it carries the gravity of scripture without the stiffness of a wedding invitation. Its italic is used for scripture and for the line where the ministry speaks softly. Jost, a geometric sans with 1920s bones, nods to the Art Deco buildings downtown and keeps practical details crisp.

Color

The magenta is the Oklahoma redbud, the state tree, which flowers along Cherry Street every spring just before the retreat. The brass accent comes from the Deco ironwork on Boston Avenue. The background is a barely-blushed paper, and the dark theme is the same house in the evening: plum-brown walls, lamp light, the redbud lifted to a softer pink.

Layout and navigation

A left sidebar keeps every page, the address and the main action in view on a laptop, which suits women who arrive with one specific question (when is the Thursday circle? who leads The Waiting Room?) and want the answer in one click. On a phone it collapses to a simple menu.

The hero

A tall photograph of an older woman mid-conversation at a study table sits on the right, and three large numbered steps sit on the left: come on Tuesday, find a smaller circle, ask for a mentor. Women told us the hardest part is knowing where to start, so the first screen answers exactly that.

Calls to action

Find your circle is the one action every visitor can take, whatever her season, so it lives in the sidebar. The rest name a specific room and time: Join the Tuesday study, Come to The Waiting Room, Ask for a mentor. None of them asks anyone to register for an event before she has met a person.

Photography

Women of different ages, ethnicities and seasons, around tables, sofas and Bibles. For The Waiting Room page we deliberately avoided babies and pregnancy photographs; the women who read that page do not need to be ambushed by them.

Accessibility

Body text is 17 pixels Jost with a generous line height, and every pairing in both themes passes WCAG AA. The Waiting Room's prayer form explains, before anything is typed, who will read it and what will happen. Crisis numbers are written in full, not hidden behind a link.

Type system

  • DisplayBona NovaBona Nova is a Polish book face with sharp, warm serifs and a beautiful italic; it reads like a well-loved study Bible rather than a greeting card.
  • TextJostA geometric sans in the spirit of the 1920s, a quiet nod to Tulsa's Art Deco downtown, and it stays crisp beside Bona Nova's calligraphic serifs.

Colour and contrast

Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
