How to read along

A slow habit in four parts

Nobody does all four every week. Do the ones you can.

  1. 1

    Step 1 of 4

Read it out loud on Tuesday

Before you listen. Hearing your own voice slows you down and you notice words you'd skip.

Read it out loud on Tuesday
  2. 2

    Step 2 of 4

Listen once, all the way through

In the car, the barn, the break room. Use the chapter times to go back to a part you missed.

Listen once, all the way through
  3. 3

    Step 3 of 4

    A few verses a day

Five minutes with the day's verses and one of the three questions from the reading note.

    Step 4 of 4

    Say it to someone

A spouse, a friend or a listening group. Saying it out loud is how it sticks.

Questions

About reading along

Which translation should I use?

Whatever you'll actually read. We read the King James aloud because it's public domain and sounds good spoken, and we compare it with three or four modern translations on air.

I fell three series behind. Where do I start?

This week. The archive will still be there. Most people who catch up do it by listening to one old episode alongside the new one.

Is there a printed version?

Yes. The reading note is printable, and large-print transcripts are on the Episodes page.

Can I use your notes in my Sunday school class?

Please do. Just say where they came from.

Why The Long Obedience looks the way it does

The Long Obedience is a weekly podcast that reads one passage of the Bible slowly and carefully, with no ads and no hurry. The site works like a quiet study desk: this week's episode first, then the reading plan, then everything else, so a listener can find their place in under a minute.

Built for
Commuters, night-shift workers, farmers and parents who listen alone and want to read along; small listening groups; and supporters who keep the show free.
Navigation
Left sidebar. A fixed column holds the name, every page and the address, so nothing is ever more than one click away on desktop.
Pages
Listen, Episodes, Read along, Live tapings, Listening groups, The hosts, Keep it free
Hero
livestream-first: the opening screen is the stream itself, with a live or next-stream badge and countdown, a play control, the service chapters and a route to past services, for churches whose online congregation is as real as the room. Variants: a = headline above a large screen with the chapter list in a side panel; b = a full-width cinematic screen with the headline over it and chapters running beneath as a strip; c = headline and a chapter timeline in a left column beside the screen; One impact number is the hero (for example meals served this year), with a line naming the unit, a sentence of context, a row of three supporting figures and one photograph. The number counts up once when it first comes into view. Variants: a = the number spans the full width above the photo and figures; b = photo on the left, number and a ledger of figures on the right; c = the number sits on a coloured panel that overlaps the bottom of a wide photograph

Typography

Piazzolla was designed for small, dense text, which gives it sturdy serifs and an honest, bookish texture even at display size. Set at 600 with a light italic for emphasis, it reads like a heading in a good study Bible. Hanken Grotesk keeps the long show notes calm, and IBM Plex Mono sets every timestamp and reference the way an audio editor sees them.

Color

The oxblood comes from old hymnal covers and the red ON AIR bulb above the studio door. The amber is the warm light of the bakery upstairs at 5 AM when the episode goes out. The neutrals lean slightly green, like birch bark in a Minnesota March. Dark mode is tuned for listeners reading in bed, with a lifted rose instead of the deep red.

Layout and navigation

A fixed sidebar keeps the seven sections in view like the contents page of a book, which suits people who come back every week and go straight to the same place. The content column is narrow and generous, closer to a page than a dashboard.

The hero

The hero is the episode itself: this week's passage, the hosts, a play control and the chapter timeline down the left so a listener can jump to the part they missed in the car. On the first Tuesday of the month it shows the live taping countdown instead.

Calls to action

The sidebar action is Get this week's reading, because reading along is what turns listeners into regulars. Other buttons are equally plain: Find a listening group, Sit in on a taping, Keep it free. The underline button style keeps them quiet next to the text.

Photography

Hands on open Bibles, a microphone in warm light, kitchen tables. The photographs stay close and quiet, like the show, and avoid stage lights. The one wide image is a straight two-lane road across the prairie at dawn, set behind the Nietzsche line the show is named for: a long way, in the same direction.

Accessibility

Every episode has a full transcript linked from the player, chapter times are real text, and the player works by keyboard. Body text is 18px with a long line height for comfortable reading, and both themes meet WCAG AA.
