Sing with us Sunday

Mutual Aid

We help pay each other's bills. It's older than insurance.

Anabaptists have shared money in hard times since the 1500s. At Clearwater that means a fund, three deacons and a rule that nobody else needs to know.

Need help today? Call Joan Nafziger, deacon, at (555) 014-7386. She answers evenings.

Asking for help

How to ask the Mutual Aid fund

Members and neighbors can both ask. Most requests are answered within a week; emergencies the same day.

Call Joan, (555) 014-7386
  1. 1

Step 1: Talk to a deacon

Call, email or catch one of us after church. Tell us as much or as little as you like.

  2. 2

Step 2: One page, if you want

There's a short form for bigger requests. For a utility bill or groceries, a phone call is enough.

  3. 3

    Step 3: We decide together

Three deacons meet on Thursday evenings. Your name never goes beyond the three of us.

  4. 4

    Step 4: No repayment

It's a gift, not a loan. Some people give back to the fund years later. Most can't, and that's fine.

Give

Give to the Mutual Aid fund

Every dollar given to Mutual Aid goes out as help. The deacons' time is volunteered and the office costs come out of the general budget.

You can also give to the general budget or the work-crew materials fund, which buys the lumber, shingles and screws.

$

= 1 bags of groceries for a family

Thank you. In the live site this opens secure checkout and emails a receipt.

Secure checkout. Receipts each January, or ask Lois for one any time.

Design notes

Why Clearwater looks the way it does

A site for a small Anabaptist congregation whose life is as much Saturday work crews and the Mutual Aid fund as Sunday morning. It is calm, practical and a little dry, the way the congregation talks, and it gives the weekday work equal billing with worship.

Built for
Neighbors in Goshen who have heard about the soup suppers or the work crew, Goshen College students looking for a church that sings, and members who want the work-day sign-up and the kit list without phoning the office.
Navigation
Left sidebar. A fixed column holds the name, every page and the address, so nothing is ever more than one click away on desktop.

Hero
A single verse or sentence set enormous as the opening statement, with its reference, a short supporting line and one action. Variants: a = the quote fills the width with a hanging quotation mark; b = the quote beside a tall photograph; c = the reference becomes the architecture, with the book name and a giant outlined chapter and verse in the left column; A tall photograph on one side; on the other, the headline, a short intro and three 'next step' rows with arrows instead of a pair of buttons. Variants: a = photo bleeds off the left edge, rows show when each step happens; b = photo bleeds off the right edge, rows are numbered steps set large

Typography

Bitter is a slab serif drawn for reading on screens, and it has the square, unfussy shoulders of the type on seed catalogues and church-press hymnal spines. Public Sans does the body copy: a neutral, civic face with nothing to prove. There is deliberately no third typeface. This congregation would notice the extra one and ask what it cost.

Color

The blue is the indigo of a work shirt washed a hundred times, and the ochre is dry straw in an Elkhart County field in August. The background is a pale sage linen rather than white, with a faint grain so the pages feel like paper. Dark mode moves to a night-field blue with the ochre warmed to lamplight.

Layout and navigation

The sidebar keeps every page, the address and the Sunday times visible on desktop at all times, which suits an older congregation that dislikes hunting through menus. Six pages, each named for what it is: Your first Sunday, Mutual Aid, Work days, What we believe.

The hero

A tall photograph of a carry-in table sits beside three plain next-step rows with times: Sunday school, worship, Wednesday soup. That is how people actually join this church, one meal or class at a time, so the site offers three small doors instead of one grand promise.

Calls to action

Sing with us Sunday, Sign up for a work day, Ask the Mutual Aid fund, Pack a school kit. Each one is a concrete thing someone can do this week, and the nav button invites people to the singing because four-part a cappella hymns are what visitors remember.

Photography

Casseroles, garden beds, timber frames, hymnals and older hands. Faces appear where they belong, at tables and on work sites, never staring into the lens. Nothing staged, nothing glossy, and no photographs of Amish buggies: Clearwater gets asked that question every week and the site answers it in words instead.

Accessibility

Body text is 17.5px on a 66-character measure. Square buttons have clear outlines and labels that make sense out of context, and every color pair passes WCAG AA in both themes. The first-visit page says plainly where the level entrance, large-print hymnals and hearing loop are.

Type system

  • DisplayBitterA sturdy slab with short serifs, like the type on a seed-company catalog or a church-press hymnal spine.
  • TextPublic SansA plain, civic sans with no mannerisms, for a congregation that prefers things said simply.

Colour and contrast

Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
