Friday Cypher: Psalms night
8:00 PM · Main room
Pick a psalm, flip it into a verse. Three-minute limit.
North Philly · Sundays at 4 PM

Cipher meets in a converted tire shop on Germantown Avenue. A DJ opens, the sermon sticks to the text, and anybody can take the mic in the cypher after. Doors at 3:30, done by about 5:30.

Who we are
In hip-hop, the cypher is the circle where everybody gets a turn. Nobody stands above it and nobody watches from outside. That's how we try to do church.
Pastor Dorian Whitlock started Cipher in 2017 with eleven people, one turntable and a borrowed basement on Lehigh Avenue. Now about 260 of us fill the old Germantown Tire building every Sunday afternoon. Some came up in church. Most of us didn't.
All week
DJ set from 3:45, worship, a 35-minute sermon and a short open cypher to close. Tacos from the truck out front most weeks.
Get connectedOpen mic for rap, spoken word and song. Put your name on the list by 7:45. Clean bars, real talk, everybody claps.
Get connectedA free recording studio for teens 13 to 19. Learn to write, record and mix, with a mentor who has done it for real.
Get connectedEggs, grits and turkey sausage for anybody on the block. About 90 plates a week, cooked by the Saturday crew.
Get connectedHeard in the room
I came to Friday to battle somebody. Pastor D let me go first, then asked me what I was really mad about.
My grandson brought me. I didn't know the songs. By the third week I knew the DJ's name.
Nobody here talks down to you. They talk to you.
I recorded my first verse in The Booth at fourteen. I'm nineteen and I mentor there now.
It's the only church where I've heard the sermon quoted back in a rap the same night.
They fed me before they asked me anything.
Roll 14
Shot by Booth kids on a borrowed camera. Every face here said yes first.

Design notes
Cipher is built for a hip-hop church in North Philadelphia whose people find it through a friend, a flyer or a clip from Friday night. The site has to sound like the room: loud type, short sentences, and the Sunday time on every screen.
Bungee was designed for vertical signage and borrows from the hand-lettered awnings on Germantown Avenue, so the headlines feel like they were painted on the block rather than typeset in an office. Archivo carries the reading text because it is wide and plain enough to sit under Bungee without a fight. Space Mono handles times and labels like the credits on a record sleeve.
The orange is safety-cone and spray-paint orange; the blue is the SEPTA blue of the Broad Street Line signs. The dark theme leads because Cipher's best-known moments happen after dark, and the light theme swaps to a cool concrete gray rather than cream.
The corner navigation keeps the first screen almost empty of chrome: a logo, a menu and one button that always says when Sunday is. Six pages, each named the way people at Cipher actually talk about them: Pull Up, Friday Cypher, The Booth.
The headline is followed by a huge running line of real bars from the last Friday Cypher. It tells a newcomer in two seconds that this is a church where regular people get the mic. It stops moving for anyone who has reduced motion switched on, and it can be paused.
The main button is 'Pull up Sunday at 4' because the time is the one thing people forget. The other actions are specific to the room: get on the Friday list, book a Booth session, back the Booth.
Dancers, neon, worship nights and a real recording booth, with the people of the neighborhood in front of the lens. Portraits are of the crew themselves and nobody is shown looking needy.
Bungee is used only for headings; every paragraph is in Archivo at 17px with generous line height. Moving type pauses on hover and focus, the cypher sign-up works with a keyboard, and orange on dark meets AA contrast.
Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
