Ask for a chaplain

Every faith, and none

We start by asking what you would like

We are Christians, and we will not hide that. We also will not use your hardest week to talk you into anything.

Visitor holding hands with a hospital patient

How we pray with you

Six promises we make at the door

Every chaplain and volunteer signs these at the end of training, and we ask families to hold us to them.

We ask before we pray

And we ask how. Out loud or silently, holding hands or not, in your words or ours, or not at all.

Matthew 6:6

We bring your own tradition

Prayer books in eleven languages, rosaries, a prayer rug and qibla card, and a list of clergy who will come at night.

We never proselytise at a bedside

If you want to talk about Jesus, we will gladly. If you don't, we won't bring him up uninvited.

Silence counts

Some of our best visits are thirty minutes without a word. We are comfortable with that.

What you say stays with us

Nothing goes in the chart or to your family unless you ask. The only exception is if someone is in danger.

We come back

If we say we will visit tomorrow, we will. If we can't, someone else will, and they'll know your name.

Matthew 25:36

Design notes

Why Bedside Chaplains looks the way it does

Bedside Chaplains sends trained chaplains to patients, families and staff in six Cleveland hospitals, day and night. The site is built for someone standing in a corridor with a phone, and it lets them ask for a chaplain before they read anything else.

Built for
Family members at a hospital bedside, patients who can still hold a phone, nurses and social workers making a referral, and people thinking about training as volunteer chaplains.
Navigation
Classic top bar. Logo left, pages right, one action. Familiar to every visitor.

Hero
a short action form as the hero: the one thing most visitors came to do (request a ride, ask for help, register a child) can be done before they scroll, with reassurance beside it. Variants: a = headline, reassurance and a photo on the left with the form as a raised card on the right; b = a tall photo carrying the headline, with the form and reassurance on a plain panel beside it; c = headline beside a photo, then the form laid out as one horizontal booking bar

Typography

Petrona sets the headlines in a soft medium weight with a light italic for second lines; it has the warmth of a handwritten note without pretending to be one. The body is Atkinson Hyperlegible, designed by the Braille Institute, at 18px. Its letters are deliberately distinct (no confusing l, I and 1), which matters when the reader is exhausted or medicated.

Color

The palette comes from the room at three in the morning: the pale green-gray of hospital linen, the deep teal of the privacy curtain and the amber of the one reading lamp left on. We avoided clinical white and alarm red entirely. The dark theme is a night shift rather than an inversion, with the teal lifted and the lamp-amber warmed so both stay clear against the dark.

Layout and navigation

A classic top bar, because nobody in a hospital should have to learn a navigation pattern. Six plainly named pages, a single action on the right and a phone number one tap away. The request form has its own anchor so nurses can text a family the link straight to it.

The hero

The home page opens with the request form itself. Most visitors arrive because someone is ill right now, so the form asks for five things and nothing more, while the reassurance beside it answers the questions people are too tired to ask: how long, how much, and will you try to convert my mother.

Calls to action

"Ask for a chaplain" is the main action because it is a request, not a booking. Every other action names exactly what happens: call the on-call chaplain, ask for a bedside vigil, join a grief group, start volunteer training. The giving action is "Fund a night shift", since nights are what donations actually pay for.

Photography

Only real bedside moments: hands held, a visitor in a chair, a lamp and candles. We left out stock photos of smiling clinicians and anything that looks like a hospital advertisement. Nobody in a photo is identifiable as a specific patient, and there are no photos of people at their most frail.

Accessibility

Large, high-contrast type, form fields with visible labels, and a phone number written out in full wherever a form appears, for people who would rather talk. Crisis numbers are in plain text, not hidden behind links. Both color themes keep body text above 7:1.

Type system

  • DisplayPetronaPetrona is a gentle, slightly calligraphic text serif; at headline size it sounds like a person speaking quietly, which is the only register that belongs in a hospital corridor.
  • TextAtkinson HyperlegibleDrawn by the Braille Institute for low-vision readers, so it stays legible on a phone held by someone exhausted, medicated or reading through tears.

Colour and contrast

Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
