What's in the bag

Two days of everything, and something to keep

Volunteers pack bags every Wednesday night, sorted by age and size, so most requests just need a name tag and a supper.

The bag itself is the child's to keep. Many kids in care have moved with their things in a trash bag; a good duffel says somebody planned for them.

  • Pajamas and two full outfits in the right size
  • New underwear and socks
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb or brush and lotion
  • A night-light, a book for their age and a stuffed animal
  • A supper for the house: lasagna, enchiladas or chili, with a salad

After you ask

From request to porch

  1. 1

    Step 1: You send sizes

Online, by phone or by text. A caseworker can ask on the family's behalf.

  2. 2

Step 2: We pack and cook

A volunteer matches the bag and a supper from the freezer, usually within four hours.

  3. 3

Step 3: A text, then the porch

The driver texts a drop-off window, leaves everything on the step and doesn't need to come in.

  4. 4

Step 4: Two weeks of suppers

If you want them, a meal team brings supper twice a week for the first two weeks.

Questions

Things parents ask at 10 PM

Do I have to be licensed through a particular agency?

No. Any licensed foster home or kinship placement in Wyandotte County can ask, whichever agency you work with. Kinship caregivers who aren't licensed are welcome too.

What if there's more than one child?

List them all in the box. Siblings get a bag each, and the supper is sized for the whole house.

We need diapers or formula tonight.

Call (555) 017-4410 until 11 PM. We keep an emergency shelf at the office, and a volunteer can usually meet you within the hour.

Will you tell anyone about the placement?

No. We keep only a first name, ages and sizes, and we delete the address after the delivery.

Through the first week? Take a Friday night off.

Respite nights are the second Friday of every month, for every child in the house.

Foster and kinship families in Wyandotte County shouldn't have to do this alone. We bring the bag, the supper and the night off.

Why Porchlight Foster Network looks the way it does

Porchlight's visitors arrive in three very different states: a foster parent who got a call at 9 PM, someone wondering whether they could ever foster, and a neighbor who wants to help. The site gives each of them a door on the first screen and keeps the urgent one, the placement bag, one tap away everywhere.

Built for
Licensed foster parents, kinship caregivers (often grandparents), caseworkers, and neighbors in Wyandotte County who want to help.
Navigation
Left sidebar. A fixed column holds the name, every page and the address, so nothing is ever more than one click away on desktop.

Hero
a short action form as the hero: the one thing most visitors came to do (request a ride, ask for help, register a child) can be done before they scroll, with reassurance beside it. Variants: a = headline, reassurance and a photo on the left with the form as a raised card on the right; b = a tall photo carrying the headline, with the form and reassurance on a plain panel beside it; c = headline beside a photo, then the form laid out as one horizontal booking bar; Three doors instead of one headline: visitors pick the path that fits them (for example New here, Need help, Want to help)

Typography

Headlines are Onest, a soft grotesque with open, rounded letters that feel kind without becoming childish. Body text is Literata, a serif made for reading on screens, so the longer pages read like a letter from someone who has done this before. The pairing keeps the tone warm for tired people reading on a phone late at night.

Color

The palette is a porch at dusk: a front-door indigo as the brand and the amber of a bulb left on as the accent. In the dark theme the two swap roles, so the amber becomes the main color and the page reads like a porch light at night. Neutrals lean slightly blue to keep the light theme cool and calm.

Layout and navigation

A fixed left sidebar holds every page, the placement-bag button and the address, so a foster parent mid-crisis never has to hunt for the menu. Page names are the things people actually say: New placement, The Closet, Respite nights. On phones the sidebar folds into a simple top bar.

The hero

The home page opens with three doors: I'm fostering or caring for family, I'm thinking about fostering, and I want to help. Each audience needs something different first, and a single headline would have served only one of them.

Calls to action

The main action is Request a placement bag, because the hours after a new placement are when families most need help and least have time to look for it. Other actions say exactly what you get: Book a respite night, Come to an info night, Join a wrap team.

Photography

Photos show ordinary home moments between adults and children: shoulder rides, drawing, holding hands. We avoided sad-child imagery and anything that could identify a child in care; in a real build, photos of children in care should always be staged with models or shot from behind.

Accessibility

Body text is 18px with generous line height, and every text pairing passes WCAG AA in both themes. Forms ask only what is needed, mark optional fields in words, and the placement form works with autofill so it can be done one-handed holding a toddler.

Type system

  • DisplayOnestOnest is a round-shouldered grotesque with open counters and a friendly, slightly handwritten rhythm in its lowercase; it reads as kind without going childish.
  • TextLiterataLiterata was drawn for long reading on screens. A bookish serif under a soft sans gives the site the voice of a neighbor writing a note, which suits people reading at midnight after a placement call.

Colour and contrast

Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
