Memorial for drivers we lost
7:00 PM · The trailer
We read the names of drivers killed on the road this year and ring the plaza's old dinner bell once for each.
Services
Sunday chapel is short on purpose. We'd rather you made it to church and back to your truck than skipped it to save the clock.
Running late? Walk in any time. Nobody turns around.

Design notes
Mile Marker Chapel is a trailer chapel parked at a truck stop on I-40 in Amarillo. The site is built for a driver in a cab at night, on a phone, with a clock running on their hours: it answers where the chapel is, whether it is open and how to reach a chaplain before anything else.
Barlow Condensed was drawn from California highway signage, and Overpass from Highway Gothic, the face on every green interstate sign. Together they speak the visual language drivers read eleven hours a day, so the site feels like part of the road. Headings stay in mixed case, the way exit signs are, and the body is set at 18px because many visitors are reading on a small screen in a dim cab.
The palette is the lot at night: interstate-sign green for actions, the amber of sodium lamps over the fuel island for highlights, and a green-black sky. The dark theme comes first because most visits happen after sundown. The light theme borrows the pale caliche dust of Panhandle concrete and keeps the green deep enough for small text.
A floating dock keeps the seven pages under the driver's thumb, with icons as well as words. The chaplain button sits in the top bar on every page. Pages are named for what a driver needs, such as Find us, Stranded and Chaplain, rather than for how the ministry is organized.
The opening screen is a drawn route along I-40 from mile 64 to mile 85, with every place the chaplains show up during the week. A driver can see in one look whether the chapel or a lot walk is on their side of town tonight. The chapel itself is pin three, with its row number and hours.
The main action is Ask for a chaplain, because the call at 1 AM about a wreck or a death at home is the reason this ministry exists. Secondary actions are literal: Find row 14, Get help tonight, Pack a care bag. The phone number appears in full wherever it helps, because many drivers would rather call than fill in a form.
Drivers in their cabs, conventional-nose trucks on open highway, and chaplains who look like the retired drivers and Panhandle church folk who actually staff places like this. The portraits are deliberately varied, because the people at a truck stop at midnight come from every state and many faiths.
Generous body size, high-contrast text in both themes, and a live open-or-closed status worked out from the hours so nobody has to do arithmetic across time zones. Phone numbers are tap-to-call. The forms ask for as little as possible and say plainly that nothing is passed to a carrier or dispatcher.
Every text pairing is checked against WCAG 2.2 in both themes.
